Ingredients:

  • 1 cup foxtail millet (thinai)
  • 1 cup split green gram (moong dal)
  • 1/2 cup grated ginger
  • 1/2 cup chopped green chillies
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon black peppercorns
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
  • Salt, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
  • 2 cups water
  • Fresh curry leaves, for garnish

Method:

  1. Rinse the foxtail millet and split green gram together, and soak them in water for at least 4 hours or overnight. Drain the water and set aside.
  2. In a large pan, heat the ghee or oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds, black peppercorns, and asafoetida. Let them sizzle for a few seconds.
  3. Add the grated ginger and chopped green chillies. Saute until the ginger is lightly browned.
  4. Add the soaked and drained millet and dal mixture to the pan. Stir well to combine with the spice mixture.
  5. Add 2 cups of water to the pan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20-25 minutes or until the millet and dal are cooked and mushy.
  6. Season with salt to taste. Garnish with fresh curry leaves and serve hot.
