Ingredients:

  • 1 cup millet (foxtail or barnyard millet)
  • 1/2 cup split yellow moong dal (lentils)
  • 1 tablespoon ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper, crushed
  • 1/2 inch ginger, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup cashews, chopped
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • 2 green chillies, chopped
  • 1/2 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, beans), chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 cups water
  • 1/4 cup fresh coriander leaves, chopped

Method:

  1. Rinse the millet and lentils thoroughly under cold water. Set aside.
  2. In a large saucepan, heat ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds, black pepper, and chopped ginger. Sauté for a minute until fragrant.
  3. Add chopped cashews and curry leaves. Stir until the cashews turn golden brown.
  4. Add green chillies and mixed vegetables. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the vegetables are slightly tender.
  5. Add the rinsed millet and lentils to the saucepan. Mix well with the vegetables.
  6. Pour in the water and add salt. Stir everything together and bring it to a boil.
  7. Reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a lid, and simmer for 20-25 minutes or until the millet and lentils are cooked and the mixture has a creamy consistency.
  8. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot.
