Ingredients

  • 1 cup moong dal (green gram)
  • 1/2 cup rice (preferably short-grain rice like idli rice or ponni rice)
  • 1/4 teaspoon methi seeds (fenugreek seeds)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda (optional)
  • Water, as needed
  • Oil or ghee for greasing the pan
  • Chutney or sambar for serving (optional)

Method

  1. Rinse the moong dal and rice separately and soak them in water for at least 4-5 hours. Also, soak the methi seeds in a separate bowl.
  2. Drain the water and blend the soaked moong dal, rice, and methi seeds into a smooth batter using a blender or grinder. Add water as necessary to achieve a thick but pourable consistency.
  3. Transfer the batter to a large bowl and add salt. Mix well.
  4. Cover the bowl with a cloth and let the batter ferment in a warm place for about 3-4 hours or overnight until it becomes light and fluffy.
  5. Once the batter is fermented, add baking soda if using and mix gently.
  6. Heat a non-stick dosa pan or a cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Grease the pan lightly with oil or ghee.
  7. Pour a ladle of the batter onto the pan and spread it evenly in a circular motion to form a thin layer.
  8. Cook the dosa for about 2 minutes until the edges start to curl and the surface is dry. Flip it over and cook for another minute.
  9. Repeat the process with the remaining batter.
  10. Serve the moong dal dosas hot with your favorite chutney or sambar.

Special Note

Moong Dal Dosa is a versatile dish that not only offers a delicious twist on traditional dosas but also provides a nutritious meal option. The fermentation process involved in making the batter enhances the bioavailability of nutrients, making it a great choice for health-conscious individuals. I particularly enjoy this dish because of its unique flavor and the satisfaction of creating something nutritious and delicious from simple ingredients.
