Moong Dal Chilla is a popular Indian breakfast dish made from split green gram lentils, also known as moong dal. This protein-rich breakfast option is a staple in many Indian households, particularly in the northern regions. The lentils are soaked, ground, and then cooked into a delicious, crispy, and savoury pancake. It’s a great way to start your day with a nutritious and filling meal.

Ingredients:
- 1 cup split green gram lentils (moong dal)
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
- 1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt, to taste
- 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
- Chopped fresh coriander, for garnish
Method:
- Rinse the moong dal and soak it in water for at least 4 hours or overnight. Drain the water and grind the dal into a smooth paste using a blender or grinder.
- In a bowl, mix the ground dal paste, asafoetida, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, and salt.
- Add water to the mixture to form a thick batter. The consistency should be similar to that of a pancake batter.
- Heat a non-stick pan or griddle over medium heat. Brush the pan with oil or ghee.
- Using a ladle, pour a small amount of the batter onto the pan and spread it evenly to form a circular shape.
- Cook the chilla for 2-3 minutes or until the edges start to curl and the surface is dry.
- Flip the chilla and cook for another 1-2 minutes or until it’s golden brown and crispy.
- Repeat with the remaining batter.
- Serve the moong dal chilla hot with your favorite chutney or raita.
I still remember the first time I had moong dal chilla at a small street food stall in Delhi. The crispy exterior and soft interior of the chilla, paired with a dollop of spicy chutney, was a match made in heaven. Since then, I’ve been hooked to this delicious and nutritious breakfast option.
