Ingredients:

  • 1 cup split green gram lentils (moong dal)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
  • Chopped fresh coriander, for garnish

Method:

  1. Rinse the moong dal and soak it in water for at least 4 hours or overnight. Drain the water and grind the dal into a smooth paste using a blender or grinder.
  2. In a bowl, mix the ground dal paste, asafoetida, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, and salt.
  3. Add water to the mixture to form a thick batter. The consistency should be similar to that of a pancake batter.
  4. Heat a non-stick pan or griddle over medium heat. Brush the pan with oil or ghee.
  5. Using a ladle, pour a small amount of the batter onto the pan and spread it evenly to form a circular shape.
  6. Cook the chilla for 2-3 minutes or until the edges start to curl and the surface is dry.
  7. Flip the chilla and cook for another 1-2 minutes or until it’s golden brown and crispy.
  8. Repeat with the remaining batter.
  9. Serve the moong dal chilla hot with your favorite chutney or raita.
