Homemade Croissant Recipe
Making croissants from scratch may take a bit of time and effort, but the results are absolutely worth it. The flaky, buttery layers of a freshly baked croissant are a treat like no other. Here’s how to make croissants at home:
Ingredients:
For the Dough:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 cup warm milk (around 110°F or 43°C)
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold
For the Butter Layer:
- 2 cups unsalted butter, cold
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Yeast Mixture:
- In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
2. Mix the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt.
- Pour the yeast mixture into the dry ingredients and mix to form a rough dough.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic. Shape it into a rectangle and wrap it in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
3. Prepare the Butter Layer:
- Place the cold unsalted butter between two sheets of parchment paper. Use a rolling pin to flatten and shape the butter into a rectangle. Refrigerate it for 20-30 minutes until it’s firm.
4. Create the Layers:
- Roll out the chilled dough into a larger rectangle on a floured surface.
- Place the butter layer in the center of the dough.
- Fold the dough over the butter to completely encase it.
- Roll out the dough-butter combination into a long rectangle and fold it into thirds, like a letter.
- Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Repeat this folding process two more times, chilling the dough between folds.
5. Shape the Croissants:
- After the final fold, roll out the dough into a large rectangle.
- Cut the dough into smaller triangles.
- Roll each triangle into a croissant shape, starting from the wider end and rolling towards the tip.
6. Let the Croissants Rise:
- Place the shaped croissants on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Cover them with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise at room temperature for about 2-3 hours until they’ve doubled in size.
7. Bake the Croissants:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Brush the croissants with little milk
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the croissants are golden brown and puffed up.
8. Enjoy:
- Allow the croissants to cool for a few minutes before serving.
- Enjoy your homemade croissants with a cup of coffee or your favorite spread.
Making croissants from scratch may take some practice, but the rewards are well worth the effort. The flaky, buttery layers of a freshly baked croissant are simply irresistible.
