Ingredients

  • 1 cup split mung beans (cheruayar parippu)
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon ghee or vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small tomato, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • 2-3 curry leaves
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing), optional
  • Fresh coriander leaves, for garnish

Method

  1. Rinse the mung beans and soak them in water for about 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a pressure cooker, combine the soaked mung beans and 2 cups of water. Cook until the beans are tender, usually 3-4 whistles.
  3. In a pan, heat the ghee or oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them sizzle for a few seconds.
  4. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it turns translucent. Then add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  5. Add the chopped tomato and cook until it is soft and mushy.
  6. Add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well.
  7. Once the pressure cooker has cooled down, open it and add the cooked mung bean mixture to the pan with the onion and spice mixture. Mix well.
  8. Add the curry leaves and asafoetida (if using) to the dal and stir well.
  9. Simmer the dal for about 5-7 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  10. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
