Ingredients

  • 1 cup split green gram (moong dal)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped tomato
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped coriander leaves
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (optional)
  • Salt, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon oil or ghee for greasing the pan

Method

  1. Rinse the moong dal and soak it in water for about 4-5 hours or overnight. Drain the water and blend the dal into a smooth paste using a blender or mixer grinder. Add a little water if necessary to achieve the right consistency.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the moong dal paste, chopped onion, tomato, coriander leaves, green chili, ginger paste, garlic paste, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, red chili powder (if using), and salt. Mix well.
  3. Add the lemon juice and mix again to ensure all the ingredients are well combined.
  4. Heat a non-stick pan or tava over medium heat. Grease the pan with a little oil or ghee.
  5. Using a ladle, pour a small amount of the batter onto the pan and spread it evenly to form a thin pancake.
  6. Cook the pancake until the bottom is golden brown, then flip it over and cook the other side until it is also golden brown.
  7. Repeat the process with the remaining batter.
  8. Serve the Savoury Moong Dal Pancakes hot with chutney, raita, or any other accompaniment of your choice.
