Ingredients

  • 1 cup moong dal (green gram lentils)
  • 1 cup uncooked white or brown rice
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon ghee or vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder (optional)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves, for garnish
  • Lime wedges, for serving (optional)

Method

  1. Rinse the moong dal and rice together until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large pot or pressure cooker, heat the ghee or oil over medium heat.
  3. Add the cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them sizzle for a few seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it turns translucent.
  5. Add the chopped tomato and cook until it softens.
  6. Add the turmeric powder and red chilli powder (if using) and stir well.
  7. Add the rinsed moong dal and rice to the pot. Stir to combine with the spices and cook for about 2 minutes.
  8. Add the water to the pot and bring to a boil.
  9. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for about 20-25 minutes or until the dal and rice are cooked and the mixture is creamy.
  10. Season with salt to taste.
  11. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with lime wedges on the side if desired.
