Ingredients

  • 1 cup sesame seeds
  • 1 cup grated jaggery
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • 1 tablespoon ghee or oil
  • A pinch of salt

Method

  1. Roast the sesame seeds in a pan over medium heat until they turn lightly brown and fragrant. Let them cool down.
  2. In a separate pan, melt the jaggery with a tablespoon of water over low heat. Once the jaggery dissolves, strain it to remove any impurities.
  3. Add the grated coconut, cardamom powder, and a pinch of salt to the melted jaggery. Mix well.
  4. Add the roasted sesame seeds to the jaggery mixture and mix until everything is well combined.
  5. Remove the mixture from the heat and let it cool slightly until it is manageable to handle.
  6. Shape the mixture into small balls or modak shapes. If the mixture is too sticky, you can add a little more sesame seeds.
  7. Serve the Ellu Urundai once they are set and firm.

Special Note

Ellu Urundai holds a special place in South Indian cuisine, particularly during festivals where it is offered as a prasad (offering) to deities. The combination of sesame seeds and jaggery not only provides a delightful flavor but also has health benefits, as sesame seeds are rich in antioxidants and jaggery is a natural sweetener. I have fond memories of making these with my family during Ganesh Chaturthi, and the aroma of roasted sesame seeds always brings back those festive and joyful times.
