Ingredients
- 1 cup sesame seeds
- 1 cup grated jaggery
- 1/2 cup grated coconut
- 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
- 1 tablespoon ghee or oil
- A pinch of salt
Method
- Roast the sesame seeds in a pan over medium heat until they turn lightly brown and fragrant. Let them cool down.
- In a separate pan, melt the jaggery with a tablespoon of water over low heat. Once the jaggery dissolves, strain it to remove any impurities.
- Add the grated coconut, cardamom powder, and a pinch of salt to the melted jaggery. Mix well.
- Add the roasted sesame seeds to the jaggery mixture and mix until everything is well combined.
- Remove the mixture from the heat and let it cool slightly until it is manageable to handle.
- Shape the mixture into small balls or modak shapes. If the mixture is too sticky, you can add a little more sesame seeds.
- Serve the Ellu Urundai once they are set and firm.
Special Note
Ellu Urundai holds a special place in South Indian cuisine, particularly during festivals where it is offered as a prasad (offering) to deities. The combination of sesame seeds and jaggery not only provides a delightful flavor but also has health benefits, as sesame seeds are rich in antioxidants and jaggery is a natural sweetener. I have fond memories of making these with my family during Ganesh Chaturthi, and the aroma of roasted sesame seeds always brings back those festive and joyful times.
