Ingredients:

  • 1 cup split pigeon peas (toor dal)
  • 1/4 cup split green gram (moong dal)
  • 1/4 cup split yellow gram (chana dal)
  • 1 large tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chillies, chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing)
  • A handful of curry leaves
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil

Method:

  1. Wash the lentils thoroughly and soak them in water for 30 minutes.
  2. In a pressure cooker, combine the soaked lentils, chopped tomato, onion, green chillies, ginger-garlic paste, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, and salt. Add 3 cups of water.
  3. Pressure cook the mixture for 4-5 whistles or until the lentils are soft and well-cooked.
  4. In a separate pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, and curry leaves. Allow them to splutter.
  5. Pour the tempering over the cooked lentils and mix well. Adjust the consistency by adding water if needed.
  6. Simmer the dal for a few minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  7. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
