  • 1 cup split Bengal gram (chana dal)
  • 2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2-3 green chillies, chopped
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder

Method:

  1. Wash the split Bengal gram thoroughly and soak it in water for 2 hours.
  2. In a pressure cooker, cook the soaked Bengal gram with turmeric powder and salt until it’s soft and well-cooked.
  3. Heat ghee in a pan, add cumin seeds, bay leaf, chopped green chillies, and grated ginger. Sauté until the spices release their aroma.
  4. Add grated coconut to the pan and roast until it turns golden brown.
  5. Now, add cumin powder and coriander powder to the pan. Mix well and cook for a minute.
  6. Transfer the cooked Bengal gram to the pan and stir to combine with the spices.
  7. Adjust salt and add sugar to balance the flavours. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the dal thickens.
