Ingredients:

  • 1 cup toor dal (split pigeon peas)
  • 1 bunch radishes, cleaned and chopped
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, diced

  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • 2-3 dry red chillies
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp sambar powder
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Method:

  1. Cook Toor Dal:
    • Rinse the toor dal and cook it in a pressure cooker until soft and mushy. Set aside.
  2. Prepare Tamarind Extract:
    • Soak a small ball of tamarind in warm water and extract the juice. Set aside.
  3. Sauté Vegetables:
    • Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, dry red chillies, and curry leaves. Sauté until the mustard seeds splutter.
    • Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  4. Add Tomatoes and Radishes:
    • Add diced tomatoes to the pan and cook until they turn mushy.
    • Add chopped radishes, turmeric powder, and sambar powder. Mix well and cook for a few minutes.
  5. Combine Dal and Tamarind Extract:
    • Add the cooked toor dal to the pan. Mix well.
    • Pour in the tamarind extract and add salt. Stir and let it simmer until the radishes are tender.
  6. Finish with Tempering:
    • In a separate small pan, heat a bit of oil. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and a pinch of asafoetida. Pour this tempering over the sambar.
  7. Garnish and Serve:
    • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
    • Serve hot with steamed rice or idli.
